Tips For Moving on a Budget With Moving Pod Containers

Whether you live in a house or an apartment, for less than one year or more than twenty, moving can be a very daunting task. Unfortunately, packing and moving is not only time consuming, but it is also an additional cost that you probably are not looking forward to spending. While moving is still an expense, there are also many different ways to save money as you move.

As people are looking to save money anywhere they can, many people forget to consider their most cost effective and convenient moving option: moving pods. The service provided by these moving pods companies is one-of-a-kind. These companies will deliver moving containers to your home, and you can fill them up with your boxes and furniture. For those who are concerned with movers scratching your grandmother's end table- you do not have to worry. You can move your furniture at your pace, and pack everything carefully so that it will not scratch or break. When you are ready, these portable containers are picked up and delivered to your new home. It is as simple as that!

As you prepare for your upcoming move, here are some helpful hints to consider while you are choosing the moving company that is right for you:

  • Call Around to Get Quotes: This is one of the most important first steps in determining which moving company you want to use. Consider your three main options: full service movers, containerized moving and renting a moving truck. Make sure that your quote includes all costs, surcharges and fees, particularly for full service movers, as these fees are what make the moving industry infamous for being difficult to work with.
  • Get a Binding Price Quote: Since some companies will add fees to their price quote after they deliver your belongings, ask if you can get a binding price quote. With a binding quote, you do not need to worry about additional fees that will put you over your moving budget. Moving pods companies are likely to give you a binding price quote, and are much more reliable than other moving options.
  • Book Everything in Advance: If you need airline tickets, hotels or even movers, you are likely to get a better rate if you plan ahead!
  • Save Money on Movers: Labor costs are the most expensive aspect of moving, so see what you can do to reduce this cost. You can move anything on your own if it is on wheels. Using a dolly, wheel barrow or wagon, you can move heavy, awkward items easily into your moving container.
As you are looking for other ways to save money on your move, here are some other small things that you can do to save money. Every little bit helps!
  • Be Organized: The more efficient you are at packing boxes, the more you will fit into each box!
  • Get Cheap Boxes: No one wants to spend money on cardboard boxes that are thrown away after only one use. Since you will need boxes, there is no reason that you can't get them for cheap! Many moving companies sell moving kits that contain boxes, tape and packing materials at a great bulk rate!
  • Save Money on Supplies (And save the environment!): Rather than buying bubble wrap, plastic wrap and packing peanuts for all of your items, use them only for the most fragile ones. For all of your other packing, using your linens, towels, rugs and old t-shirts is a great way to save some money.
  • Keep Receipts for Tax Purposes: Keep track of all of your moving related expenses, and store your receipts somewhere you will find them. Many moving expenses are tax deductible; check with your accountant for specific details.
  • Have a Garage Sale: This is a perfect time to get rid of anything that you think you no longer need or will not use. This is a great way to make a little extra cash, reduce fees for trash, and if you have less stuff, the cost of your move will decrease!

Tips on Packing a Moving Truck

Using a rented truck to relocate can save you a lot of cash in comparison to using a moving company. If you can do this, you'd be wise to but who amongst us would consider themselves an expert at moving? For loading moving rental trucks a real knack is needed. Learn how to pack moving rental trucks so that nothing gets lost.

Biggest items should be loaded first. So you have gotten the rental truck, and you're staring at the large empty space. What do you do to start? You're going to have to put the bigger things inside the mover's truck before you do the smaller things. Appliances like the fridge, stove, washer, dryer and cabinets need to go onto the moving rental truck first since they need the most space. It's a good idea to get hold of an appliance cart that comes with straps (get some buddies who are in shape to help move your stuff). Cover large items with blankets or towels so they don't get scratched or dented during the move.

Fit the narrower items into the spaces. When all the big things are in, start to slide the larger, narrower pieces into any available spaces. Your aim is to get the truck as compact as you can. Mirrors, pictures, mattresses and even tabletops are thin enough to edge in between bulkier items without taking more space. A plastic mattress cover over your mattresses when you transport them will save them from getting grubby. A local moving supply store will be able to sell these to you at a reasonable price. Don't forget to wrap up or box up mirrors and prints.

If you have furniture that looks like it won't make the trip in one piece, then disassemble it beforehand. It may be annoying to reassemble, but it will be the best thing to make your move easier. Bed frames and bedheads can be pulled apart to make them more compact.

If a stereo cabinet will break down into sections, by all means, take it apart; this will make it much easier to move. It can be back breaking not to take things apart so make the effort to disassemble.

Fill up the bottom with the boxes that weigh the most. Now that the awkward big items have been loaded onto the rental moving truck, you can begin to move your boxes onto the truck. Heavy boxes should be loaded first, nearest to the floor. When the heavy boxes are in the moving truck, they will act as a base for other items, so be sure that they are strong enough to carry a heavy load.

You can use the lighter boxes to fill the whole space. Stack the lighter boxes as high as possible, but ensure they cannot shift or fall as you drive. Packing your moving boxes and furniture carefully onto a moving truck, filling in all available space, will enable you to carry more in each load.

Moving Truck Rental - How to Rent a Moving Truck in 4 Easy Steps

The moving truck rental is going to be one of the most critical tasks you'll need to accomplish if you're moving yourself. If you're not careful, it can also be time-consuming, stressful, and expensive. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be that way. With the tips in this article, you should be able to make things easier on yourself.

Moving Truck Rental: Step 1- Determine days you can move.

Having a larger number of potential days available for your move gives you many more options. The day you pick can determine not only whether a truck is available, but how much you'll be charged. Here are the guidelines:

  • Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekends are the hardest and most expensive times to rent. You typically need to book these months in advance.
  • Weekends are more difficult to book than weekdays.
  • The middle weeks of the month are easier to reserve than the first and last weeks.
Moving Truck Rental: Step 2- Identify how large a truck you want.

There are a few factors you should consider in determining the truck size you'll need:

  • the quantity of boxes and furniture you need to move
  • the availability and prices of trucks on your moving day ·your comfort level with driving very large vehicles (don't underestimate this one)
Trucks range in size from 10 feet (ideal for a 1-bedroom apartment) up to 26 feet (can handle up to a 4-bedroom house). Avoid the temptation to get a size larger than you need. Most rental agencies can help you determine the ideal size.

Moving Truck Rental: Step 3- Select your rental agency.

Three of the most common names for truck rentals are Budget Truck Rental, U-Haul, and Penske. Some car rental firms, such as Enterprise, offer large vans or trucks in specific locations. Make a short list of rental locations close to you. Then call and find out:

  • which trucks they have available on your intended moving days
  • which payment options are accepted, especially if you're planning on using anything other than a certified check or money order (many individual locations do not accept cards like American Express or Discover, and some don't accept credit cards at all)
  • operating hours, including the time when the truck needs to be returned before being charged extra ·whether they offer "one-way" rentals, if that's something you need
  • initial deposit(s)
  • base rate per day and/or hour
  • charge per mile (watch out for this one- many companies offer a low daily rate but charge a fortune for the miles)
  • cost for gas
  • additional fees for insurance, moving pads, hand truck, twine, etc.
  • any other charges (be polite, persistent and direct in making sure they have provided with ALL the costs. You might want to try a phrase such as, "So if I show up with only that exact amount, down to the penny, in my pocket, I will be able to pay the bill in full?")
Now that you have all the critical information, determine which truck option most closely meets your needs and budget. Once you've made your decision, you need to make your reservation, and sooner rather than later. This is especially true if your desired date is over a weekend or a holiday, in that those slots fill up first.

Moving Truck Rental: Step 4- The Big Day

  • Plan to be in line at the rental truck location at least 15 minutes before they open, in that the paperwork portion of the transaction can sometimes be lengthy, and if only a few people are in line in front of you, you could be in for quite a wait.
  • It's also a good idea to take a copy of your insurance card with you if you normally keep it in your car- you don't want to have to fool with a fine from a traffic officer.
  • Be sure to check the truck thoroughly for damage prior to signing the final contract, and mark any damage on the appropriate form.
  • Finally, try out driving the truck around the parking lot before heading out to make sure you can adequately control the vehicle. If there's an issue, you'll want to know before getting into traffic.
Once these steps are done, you should be on your way to a smooth moving truck rental experience!

Moving Truck Advertising

Given the large number of American who move every year, the moving truck business is indeed booming. Several companies that provide different kinds of transport services are concentrating entirely on the ‘packing and moving’ business, and several new companies have entered the business. All in all, it becomes highly difficult for a family to choose the correct packing and moving company.

Moving trucks advertise s in the yellow pages and on the Internet extensively. There are many ads in newspapers and home improvement magazines. Print ads are small and only tell the name of the company and give a contact number. Internet advertising allows moving truck companies to have their own designed websites devoted to their services. It is not unusual to see many pictures of their moving trucks and comments from previous clients.

A moving truck advertisement must detail where the company’s main office is and the areas where they operate. It is important that the driver of the moving truck know the area in and out, in case of any emergency.

The prime purpose of a moving truck company advertisement is to attract more clients. You should not be carried away by their claims and upscale advertisements, but must actually shop around. You must take quotes of at least three moving truck companies before making the final decision. It helps if you personally know someone who has used the services of the company you are thinking of going with. It is also extremely important to actually visit the office of the company before signing on the dotted line.

How to Transport Your Vehicle When Moving

Moving day is full of dilemmas that you must come up with solutions to. One of the most common dilemmas is how to transport your vehicle from your old home to your new one when moving. Several options are available to you, and we will briefly discuss some of them here.

The only real time when moving your automobile becomes a concern is during a long distance move. If you must rent a moving truck, then that leaves you with the problem of how you will get your car or truck to your new home without making another trip. During long distance moves, a second trip is often not feasible.

One of the most common methods of transporting your vehicle along with the moving truck is to have a second person drive the vehicle for you. However, if you have nobody making the move with you, or if there are more automobiles than licensed adult drivers who are moving, then this will not work.

If using a moving truck, then a common option made available is the use of a trailer for the vehicle. If deciding to use a trailer, the type of trailer you choose will impact the method and level of ease of your transport, as well as determine the amount of exposure your vehicle will face during transport. Be sure to spend sufficient time and effort when choosing what type of trailer will be best for your vehicle.

Sometimes, the mover will have too many autos to transport, or will not be comfortable enough driving the trailer, so this option will again not do.

Another option available to you is to hire a vehicle moving company. Most auto transport companies provide door-to-door service, meaning that they will pick up and deliver your vehicle as close to your specified address as possible. This does not necessarily mean that they can deliver your means of transportation to your front door, as many trucks and trailers cannot travel down narrow residential streets. Most likely, your transporter will request that you meet them at a nearby parking lot to load and unload your car. You will need to be able to be somewhat flexible with your timeframe and ensure that either you or an authorized representative is available to release your car to the driver.

Other larger, high volume transport services offer a similar method referred to as terminal to terminal transport and delivery. These types of services are typically a little more affordable than door to door services. These terminals are usually regional storage facilities located in larger cities, and are normally able to work more around your time frame.

Portable storage systems are a growing service as of late. These services allow for a storage container to be delivered to your door, where you can load it up with your belongings. The company will then pick up the container and deliver it to your new residence. These services are ideal for long distance moves and can allow you to drive your own vehicle to your new destination, without having to move your belongings at the same time.
