A Parents Guide to Children's Fancy Dress Ideas

Looking for some ideas for your children's fancy dress party? This article is a step by step guide helping you choose a costume for your child.

1. Deciding on a theme
This one might have already been decided for you, given that many fancy dress parties are themed in some fashion (especially at Halloween!). Let's assume however that your child has been invited to, say, a birthday party, and no theme has been specified.

For children, choosing a fancy dress theme is quite straight forward, and is largely dependant on whether you are catering for a boy or a girl.

Boys
For boys (and men), the best fancy dress themes are surrounding their favourite TV, film and comic book characters. Other good themes are westerns and pirates.

Girls
For girls, there tends to be less demand for comic book characters than for fairytale characters - wanting much more to look pretty than fearsome. Themes for girls generally feature dresses, wings and all manners of decidedly sparkly outfits!

2. Choosing an outfit
Once you have picked a theme for your fancy dress costume, you will have narrowed down your search to a much smaller selection. In the case of superhero and TV & film costumes however you might find that there are still a great deal to choose from, given their high popularity. The best bet is to either find out if your child has any preferences, or if not then simply take a look around and see what jumps out at you.

There are many fancy dress shops distributed across the UK and other countries, several of which may be local to you to visit. If you can't find a fancy dress shop, or they don't supply what you are looking for, there is a wide range of online stores which supply a vast selection of costumes.

Some Ideas
If after looking around you are still stumped, I have listed out a few ideas for boys and girls below:

Boys

  • Batman
  • Spiderman
  • Superman
  • Robin Hood
  • Peter Pan / Hook
  • Cowboy

Girls

  • Princess
  • Bumble Bee
  • Rumba Girl
  • Medieval Girl
  • Cowgirl

3. To buy or to hire?
If you are looking to hire a costume, you are likely to only get this service from a physical store; however you may still be able to view the product range available online. Costume hire is quite cheap but for the biggest benefit you will need to hire an expensive outfit - for cheap costumes you may pay a decent percentage of the purchase price to hire it, so why not go all the way and re-use it in the future?

For buying costumes the internet is a fantastic resource for finding and comparing different fancy dress outfits. You may understandably have some reservations about buying online as you don't know if the costume will fit, but most children's fancy dress costumes only tend to come in one size for a certain age group so buying from a store wouldn't be any different to online.

4. Completing your costume with accessories
After you have chosen your costume, there may be some finishing touches that need to be made in order to make the outfit look complete. Not to fret, there is a plethora of fancy dress accessories available both in stores and online. These accessories range from swords and wands to halos and horns, and you should be able to find just about anything you are looking for by doing a search on your favourite search engine.
