Interior Designing For Interested Individuals

When you think about it, interior designing is everywhere. It's in buildings, offices, hotels, apartments, houses, schools and even small spaces you never dared think possible for interior designing. But the fact is, it is, and interior designing, whether you look at it as a profession or you just have a knack for pulling things and colors together in one room to make them look good, you are a certified interior designer.

Interior designing in its simplest sense is art. Although it looks good to the eyes of people, particularly to the clients; important information which pertains to the why and how of the materials, colors and objects used for a certain room are all needed to be justified. This means, that an interior designer doesn't only do things that are good for a certain space but it also thinks about why certain materials is suggested to the client.

What's great about interior designing is that each space, corner and spots of a room at least, is utilized, beautified and exposed together with the main areas of the room. If you have a small room, interior designing can do wonders for you to make it look spacious. Working with what the clients want, how they react to their environment and stating what good the room is for to them helps an interior designer think and conceptualize a cozy and pretty environment.

So there, you get the idea. The basic essentials of being an interior designer is the creativity skill that you have in you. Treat colors, corners, accents and objects your friends because when you develop how to make them all interact with one another, you start to create an original concept. Even when you think you wont be making it to this kind of business, the important thing is that you practice your ability to decorate and love what you do and eventually put it to good use.

How to Earn a Job in Interior Design

Many people think of interior design as oriented to home design and remodeling. In fact, interior designers are involved in the design of space in office buildings, shopping malls, hospitals, hotels, airport terminals and nearly every other type of structure that has human traffic flowing through it.

While most designers focus on decorating, increasing numbers are getting involved with architectural details such as molding, and room detailing. Some are also tackling large building projects that have issues such as traffic flow, window location and lighting combinations. Here is a list of the skills that interior designers must acquire and the education options that will develop those skills.

  • Interior designers are going to be working with architects as often as not. They must be able to read blueprints, be familiar with local fire codes and federal requirements such as the ADA ground rules that establish access for the disabled. They may also find themselves in negotiations with contractors, electricians and/or carpenters, seeking a compromise between construction practices and design requests.
  • Once an interior designer has reached an agreement with the client, the design plan is reproduced in sketches and then on a computer in CAD format. Both the original design and the alterations or changes are recorded in the CAD program. A designer needs to be comfortable with CAD software and the types of presentation material it produces.
  • Once the plan is completed, the designer orders the raw materials - which in this case are things like furniture, lighting, draperies, flooring and possibly art work. The next task is working with the contractor to get lighting fixtures installed properly, flooring laid and draperies hung. An interior designer has to be able to hold his or her own in a debate with a contractor or his crew.
  • The educational options for an interior designer vary. There are two and three year programs offered by some institutions that result in an associate's degree. There are also bachelor's degrees in interior design offered by many schools. A graduate with an associate's degree will probably spend time as an understudy in the business. Someone with a bachelor's degree in interior design is considered sufficiently schooled to participate in a formal apprenticeship program with a designer or a design firm.
  • After a one to three year apprenticeship, an interior designer may sit for a licensing exam. About half the states in the Union and the District of Columbia require licensure. Membership in a professional association is also recognized as a credible asset.

Interior Design Couple Counseling

What is this all about and how does it apply to you. If you are a home owner and you are married or living with a partner, I am sure that you have had more than one argument over the interior design of your home. In fact when buying a new home or remolding an existing home fighting with your partner about what color to paint the walls, what furniture works, flooring, window covering is inevitable. A home is very personal, it is our retreat from the outside world, a place where we entertain and raise our families. When two people come together, and combine their lives in a dwelling, they both are going to have their own style and ideas on how their house should look. I find this to be especially true for couples who move in together in their 30"s and older. Most of them have already lived alone and have personal belongings that they want to put into their new home. I have even worked with couples that have completely different taste and we still were able to make it work.

Sometimes couples will get lucky and one partner just does not care, this article is not for you. This article is also not for the couples who are angry at one another and use designing their home as a war path of disagreements. This article is for the couples who are having a hard time agreeing and want to learn how to make it work. The key element is the willingness of wanting to make it work, and using the tools available. I have been an interior designer for 15 years and have a Masters degree in Marriage and family therapy, over the years I have helped many couples with their design dilemmas.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started. Magazines are a wonderful tool in figuring out what you like and showing it to your partner. Spend some time thumbing through design magazines and getting to know what one another likes. Write down what both of you agree on and what both of you do not agree on. Compromise is the key: Take the time to listen to each other. Each person pick out four items that you just can't live without. Those four items that you each picked has to be a part of your home. For example, one person may love the color blue, this color has to be in the design of your interior, it can be paint, or fabric, bedding ect. One person may say I can't live without carpet and the other person may have allergies and carpet is a dust collector, solution: area rug, non-toxic 100% wool carpet, or just carpet one room.

Once the two of you have come up with your list of must have's and absolutely must not haves, research a good designer to help you put it all together. Gather your magazines, with the pictures that each of you like and sit down with the designer and start to put the samples together. Doing this work before you meet with the designer will save you money on time and aggravation. Show the designer around your home and pick out the pieces of furniture that will stay and what needs to be replaced. If the two of you have a hard time working together, then one of you has to be the team captain, then later you can sit down with your partner and go over all of the details.

The best investment you can make in your home and in your marriage is taking the time to listen to one another and create a home that reflects both of your personalities. I have even had couples, who choose a separate room in their home to reflect their taste, or one person picked out the wall color and the other person picked out the furniture.

For more information on interior designing as a couple, I have developed a five part article series that details, exercises and how to solutions if you get stuck as a couple in your design situation.
