About Leather Cleaning at Your Home and Office

Leather is more like feather - delicate and beautiful. Therefore it should be handled with utmost care. Whether it is about cleaning leather upholstery or moving the furnishings, or for that matter buying and maintaining it, leather cleaning must be handled with cotton gloves preferably by an expert.

It is sincere advice from me, a leather cleaning professional, with many years of experience not to experiment with Do It yourself kits available in the market on your priceless leather upholstery. Unless of course you know enough about the products that and ingredients that are being used in the kit and that it will suit the type of leather you have. It's also important that along with the kit you also know enough about your leather too.

We all know that leather is expensive and a delicate material. Special products and procedures have been developed to protect the leather furnishings from damaging in the process of cleaning it.

We also have to understand one thing that though leather is likely to be mistreated; it is in reality tougher than we usually give it credit for. You'd agree that most of leather's usefulness is based on its durability aspect.

A simple procedure for leather cleaning at home involves several steps. The first one being to get the required material assembled. It includes soap, olive oil, and a few soft, clean rags, and water. Before you start cleaning your entire leather or stained spot, make sure to test the cleaning method and product right from start to finish in a small, inside area that is not easily visible to the guests, to ensure that it won't lighten, darken, or dry your specific piece of leather.

Next, rub the leather against itself a little so that the soap can get into the cloth before you start cleaning. Then slightly dampen another portion to wipe any soap or water residue from the leather. While doing leather cleaning you have to understand that even finished leather is not completely water-repellant, and that you should never rinse it with a very wet piece of cleaner or under running water directly.

Use a dry piece of rag to do away with the light film of excess water that may be left on the surface of the leather after rinsing it. And lastly, do not ever forget to condition leather with olive oil after taking it through cleaning procedure. Since the soap would probably have removed some of its natural oils, the olive oil will help to restore it to an extent. This is where the olive oil comes into use. But make sure that you sprinkle a very small portion of olive oil on a dry cloth and gently rub it into the leather.

If you will follow the above steps as mentioned you will be happy with this method of cleaning leather; after you are through you will notice that your leather item, whether it is car or living room upholstery or your jacket- it will look as good as new - absolutely clean and smelling fresh.
