Top Tips For Choosing a Wedding Photographer

Selecting a wedding photographer for your big day can seem like a daunting task at first. But with a little guidance and knowledge it can be relatively straight forward. It's just about knowing what to look for and asking the right questions. This can make the selection process much easier, and ultimately you will feel confident that your final choice is the right choice based on an informative decision.

Traditional photography or Contemporary Reportage?

If you look at your parents wedding album or your favourite auntie's photos on her big day, you will probably notice a familiar trend between the photos and between the albums. The photos will have lots of group shots of people looking directly at the camera. Some photographers were a little more creative than this but because of the technicalities of 35mm film cameras this style dominated the industry for years. Photographic film negatives and prints are involved with this style.

With the advent of digital cameras, a whole new world of possibilities opened up and effectively changed the wedding industry. Contemporary Reportage photography, also know as the 'photo-journal', was born. Instead of prints and film negatives, DVDs and CDs of the images are the expectation. Wedding albums have moved on too, changing from old fashioned prints in album inlays to pictures printed onto the actual pages of the album. This is known as a digital album.

Contemporary Reportage photography

In the hands of an adept digital wedding photographer this style of photography can be a wonderful depiction of your special day, capturing the natural wave of events and emotions as they happen, and creating art from your images whilst remaining truthful to your wedding day. It is a fine balance of the photographer's individual input and what is necessary to create a well rounded album.

How to find a good wedding photographer

If you have a blank canvas the internet is the best place to start your search for your wedding photographer. Using popular search engine like Google allows you to find local photographer's websites and view their portfolios before selecting the ones you like. It is advised that you visit the photographer in person before booking them. By doing this you can find out whether their style and competence meets your expectations by viewing whole weddings in depth and to also build rapport between you. This is very important on your day because you want to feel relaxed in front of the camera and know you are in good hands.
